About the Ebook
In 1984, I realized a long time dream and was able to visit China. I traveled with Earthwatch, an organization that organizes trips where the participants aid scientists in working trips all over the world. Our leader was Paul Sun, a native of China, now a US citizen and an architect living in Boston. He was studying folk architecture and I served as the photographer for the group. We had the cooperation of the Chinese government and we were allowed to go anywhere in the villages we visited and to photograph even in the homes. It was a rare opportunity at the time.
After the trip, as I was printing the images in the darkroom, I kept being reminded of pictures I had taken earlier in the US. I retrieved the pictures that had been brought to mind and was surprised at how many pairings that I found. I made two more trips to China, one where we traveled by bicycle, and I had fun finding situations where the similarity was more evident than the differences.
